At first glance, "Reel" appears to be soft-spoken existential
poetry, and of course it is definitely only that and no more,
because to say otherwise might spoil some of the fun for you. Don't
read on if you haven't seen it yet! OK, here are some of Reel's
mathematical secrets: the audio is repeated exactly, with the
meaning of the words of the narration changing from emotional to
mathematical. "I" the pronoun becomes "i" the number, "it's plain"
becomes "its plane," etc. It's one big pun. The visuals run in
reverse, and viewed backwards tell the story of a student becoming
distracted from her class notes with thoughts of love, complete with
a short conversation through passed notes. Finally, the background
music is a wordless choral rendition of a phrase from John Lennon's
"Imagine," reversed in time.
