Can the elephant get out of the maze? Can it reach the large grassy patch? Can it reach The Pond?
If in a region with one closed loop, you can draw a straight line that transverses the loop an odd number of times, you will have gone from the inside out or vice versa. An even number of crossings, and you stay on the same side of the loop as you started.
