Art is a good excuse to play. Play is a fun way to try on new
realities. Exploring patterns and symmetry through abstraction
presents an opportunity to look outside of a regular pattern of
seeing. Relationships between underlying forces exemplify the
inseparability of structure and narration. Structures and voids
organize a lattice around these distinctions and connections.
Hexastix are symmetric, non-intersecting cylinder packing
arrangements that can extend infinitely to fill space. This
Hexastix knot connects the ends of an arrangement of 72 congruent
cylinders, with 4 twists and 68 half loops. Inspired by an
original George Hart sculpture titled "72 Pencils,” this knot
links cylinders into a continuous embedded loop, made with over 10
meters of 6mm glass rod. Using glass to construct polystix allows
light to bounce around the structure, highlighting the beautiful
woven spaces inside.
