Through my love of origami, I came across the exciting world of
tessellations. I found them very interesting, as the folds would
always come together geometrically and beautifully as I was folding.
After folding some tessellations such as Eric Gjerde's spread hex
tessellation, among others, I started to modify pre-existing
tessellations. After that, I started to fold and make my own
tessellations. I worked off of basic ideas and modified them to be
much more intricate and beautiful. My tessellations are meant to
explore the concept of recurring geometric figures, while also drawing
attention to the space in between these figures
This is my third large original tessellation, which is why I
called the piece "Trilogy." I again decided to use a triangle
grid, and this time settled on blue paper, which I thought would
be a nice pair with my other red and yellow pieces. My design
process was to make a bunch of different folds and then try and
maneuver the paper so that it was flat. The product was a
repeating design that made use of squash folds. What I liked is
that the piece seems to have circular shapes on it, even though no
folds are curved. In the end, I had a lot of fun creating this
piece, and I feel that this style of making origami pieces will
provide great opportunities for me in the future.
