I create works on paper and with paper. As I work to clarify and
deepen my understanding of mathematics, I often explore concepts with
2D drawings and 3D paper constructions. Interesting and beautiful
images and objects happen, but that's only partially my doing: mostly,
it's mostly the fault of the mathematics that I'm poking at.
Traditional Zhen Xian Bao folders store needlework tools, using
many kinds of ingeniously scaled boxes which collapse flat and
hide layers. After unraveling how these boxes scale with each
other I’ve been following explorations beyond what is customary:
instead of storing tools, I’m storing 2D and 3D mathematical
ideas, housing them here for easy retrieval. Hidden below the top
layer hides a set of chiral pleats, flanking a page of cookie-like
images created from rotations of geometric shapes. Hidden also are
pages which have been cut and folded to create confusing ambiguity
between front and backs of pages. The graphs of double variable
equations have been exploited to become colorfully patterned
papers adorning the cover and some boxes.
