I’ve had a life long love affair with geometry, and my sweet spot is taking ancient geometric traditions – particularly, in recent years, Islamic geometric patterns – and combining them with modern mathematical concepts like fractals and polyhedra to create unique, modern art and décor pieces for the modern home. I love making art that captures ancient traditions with a modern twist, and that brings order, beauty, and peace into peoples’ private spaces.
Each "mountain" is a replica of one of my earliest 8-fold Fractal
Islamic Patterns. Remarkably, these patterns can be mirror
reflected along certain lines perpendicular to radial lines from
the center, and the two halves will still merge seamlessly. This
creates interesting negative spaces reminiscent of lagoons or
inlets. By combining multiple copies reflected across different
lines at different angles (multiples of 22.5 degrees, in this
case), one can develop an asymmetric boundary out of these highly
symmetric pieces. This shape immediately reminded me of the
topological maps that festooned my bedroom walls in junior high
and high school. I chose a complex color palette that evokes the
color scheme commonly used in such maps.
