Starnary octahedron

40.0 x 28.0 x 28.0 cm

3D-printed and transparent methacrylate

2023

Within the octahedron there is a 3D-printed star composed of 24 identical triangles. The vertices of each triangle correspond to the center of the octahedron, the midpoint of one of the 12 edges of the octahedron, and the incenter of one of the 2 octahedron faces opposite that edge. The 24 triangles are located on the 6 secondary symmetry planes of the octahedron forming an irregular star composed of the union of 4 overlapping triangles. The 3 main symmetry planes of the octahedron are not captured by the 3D star geometry. So, even though the 3D star is defined by the octahedron, it is difficult to perceive the latter only from the star on its own. This relationship is only revealed when packing the 3D star within a transparent octahedron.
