Additional info

The integration machine is an interactive work of art showcasing the links between math and making. Assembled from easily available material, it has three main parts - a tracer, a ball resting on a rotating disc, and a pen mechanism. Using the tracer, we track each point on the input function. The tracer positions the ball along a diameter of a disc that is moving at a fixed angular speed. The ball is free to rotate at a speed controlled by its distance from the center of the disc. The ball controls the rotation of a follower cylinder which, in turn, sets the slope of an arm with a pen. Since the slope at each point of the output is determined by the input function, it is the integral.
