Statement

My current artworks focus on puzzles, ones that I create for myself and for others. In the past, I explored edge- and corner-matching puzzles and discovered arrangements that would tile the plane. During the early days of the COVID pandemic, I found these puzzles needed more thought and time than I had for them, so I created a newer puzzle, one that was easier to solve. This puzzle combines both corner and edge matching components and also tiles the plane. I also missed seeing my friends, so I created a puzzle for them and me, based on their choice of shapes and colors. With their responses, I create an artwork that combines their preferences but also includes puzzles that I create for myself in designing the artwork.

CP 1 (COVID Puzzle 1) is the first artwork I created using the new puzzle I developed. In addition to the corner- and edge-matching component of the piece, the eight colors are placed so that each color appears once in each column and each row. The number and types of shapes that are colored are the same in each row.
