Statement

I am a very practical person, so my art consists of physical objects and patterns. For more than a decade this has manifested as crocheted shapes exploring knotted and hyperbolic space. I enjoy discovering the natural folding that occurs as more and more material accumulates on a project. Recently I’ve been discovering a new fascination with the patterns of digits in a given famous sequence, like powers of 2 or Fibonacci. There is something compellingly mysterious about the field of numbers that looks like random chaos, but you know follows a simple invariable rule. Working on a project that has discrete chunks also makes it easy to parcel out a line a day so that a large daunting project gets done slowly but surely.

I keep track of how many days old I am and often celebrate the numbers that are palindromes or full houses (two of one digit with three of another). This project was born from contemplating how long until my next "full house day" and a love of combinatorics. I find a very satisfying calm when viewing sets that lend themselves to a natural arrangement that then reveals hidden geometry that is only apparent when the elements of the set are seen all together. In this full house piece I am especially drawn to the contrast between the two straight and two sloped lines that stand out for each number showing off how the pattern has both phasing and non-phasing portions. I made this piece using 0.4mm fineliner markers on graph paper (10 sq/in).
