Additional info

This exhibit has three wood-fibre cars that help visualize the effect of parametrically combining sine and cosine waves to obtain smooth curves. Each car uses gear mechanisms to guide a marker along the locus of the curve and plots it on the ground. The first car traces the path of a point on the wheel’s rim and can draw cycloids and trochoids by altering the drawing arm’s length. The second car, via the gear system, oscillates and plots a circle through its x and y movements. The third and the final car, traces waveforms obtained on adding two sine waves of adjustable amplitudes, frequencies and phase difference. Collectively these cars demonstrate how adjustments in mechanical configurations help visualize abstract mathematical functions.
