Statement
Murray Heasman has worked with and been fascinated by Celtic knotwork for the last 30 years. Having designed and carved some leather guitar straps to simulate weaving Celtic knot patterns, he got a call one day - Jimmy Page wanted to meet him at their rehearsal studio! Realizing that there was something very special in these knots, he has dedicated his work since to making people understand the art, mathematical beauty and symmetry of knots, and to break down the conception that they are complex. Projects have included huge rope wall hangings, a game called Tara, his own take on crosswords called knotwords and now Knotiverse. He has spent 20 years in the puzzle and games industry, particularly interested in abstract strategy games.
Artworks
The Knotiverse Cube is made up of 232 interconnecting pieces plus joints to form one continuous knot, using six different shaped pieces. Traditionally, Celtic knotwork has always been used decoratively in a 2 dimensional format, although with weaving or relief carving can form a “third” dimension. I have always enjoyed exploring new applications for knots, and now, just one of the included pieces enables true 3 dimensional structure, so many more forms can be built. The prototypes have been built with a combination of a 3D SLA printer and regular moulding technology. Knotiverse is a patent pending system which will be launched on Kickstarter in late 2016.
