Statement

Meander Art: We present a relief-cutting method to turn rigid planar surfaces into flexible ones. We have developed algorithms to obtain a large subset of all possible 2D meander-patterns with a simple remeshing process. Our algorithm can be applied to any polygonal mesh to produce 2D meander-patterns. Moreover, since these meander-patterns are obtained by a remeshing algorithm, by changing parameters, we can control local properties of the pattern with intensity of images to obtain desired stiffness in any given region. This approach that provides a simple interface to construct desired patterns also helps us to create images by laser cutting wood panels.

Wood Panel

2017

This is a photograph of laser-cut planar-wood representation of a detail of Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam in Sistine Chapel. This laser cut wood panels is obtained by using our meander pattern creation method. Darker regions are more flexible than lighter regions. The original photograph was larger than 9000 x 4000 pixels. The wood panel itself is 30 cm x 63 cm.

This is a photograph of our laser-cut wood representation of Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa. It was obtained by our meander pattern creation method on a wood panel with laser cutting. Darker regions are more flexible than lighter regions. Original photograph is larger than 7000 x 5000 pixels. The wood panel itself is 63 cm x 43 cm.
