Biography

My artwork involves a lot of experimentation as well as inspiration from over a decade of teaching mathematics at universities. Most recently, I have become interested in sculpture, particularly using fiber arts techniques, mathematics, and programming.

About the look

Saddle Bracelet

28 gauge copper wire

2022

Saddle Bracelet is crocheted copper wire in the form of a hyperbolic paraboloid. We focused on one quarter of the surface at a time, crocheting the part of the surface between two adjacent segments of the X-shaped linear level curves. We used central parabolic curves to determine row numbers. We used arclengths and the scale of the piece we wished to create to determine the number of stitches in each row. Short rows between the X-shaped linear level curves are the basis for 1/4 of the surface that results in excess fabric, pushing the surface into its characteristic saddle shape. The mathematics and pattern behind this piece are joint work with Megan Martinez at Ithaca College.
