Statement

I am fascinated by static and dynamic 3D shapes. In my scientific research, I explore complex geometries and their physical realizations through manual or digital fabrication technologies. Together with my team, we leverage geometric insights and advanced mathematical optimization methods to calculate the precise shape of novel material systems. We create artistic sculptures to explore the potential of our research and create visual representations that highlight the unique geometric and functional properties of our scientific discoveries. My goal is to create spatial experiences that stimulate curiosity and playful exploration, driven by mathematical insights and algorithmic design methods.

Additional info

Caustic Lion is a sculpture that invites the observer to discover a hidden message painted in light. A vertically arranged aluminum plate is engraved to recreate the delicate structure computed by a mathematical algorithm. When light rays reflect off the plate, they are deviated from their original path to form a caustic, a light image that reveals a drawing of a lion. This effect is surprising, since no resemblance to this image is revealed in the plate itself, even though a precise mathematical relation exists between the drawing and the seemingly randomly undulating surface of the plate. However, this relation is so complex, that it can only be discovered algorithmically and can only be fabricated with high-precision CNC milling.
