Statement
At Cherry Arbor Design, we create pieces that integrate math and art. We want to draw people in to touch, engage, create, and puzzle over the mathematical ideas underlying our work. Some of our work is based on ideas that are well-known to mathematicians, but are novel to others, such as Penrose tilings and fractals that tesselate. We also produce work based on lesser-known but intriguing ideas that bring in other branches of math, such as topology. Our goal is for everything we make to be beautiful and thought-provoking.
Artworks
Many of our pieces employ radial symmetry, but typically with smooth edges, or a limited number of angles. The Barnsley fern presents a richly structured, tapered shape that makes it ideal for creating a visually dense rosette design. From a distance, this arrangement suggests the shape is a single whole of something organic, but the viewer is unsure what. On closer inspection, we recognize its form.
