Statement
Tomohiro Arimune is a student of the department of architecture, Osaka Metropolitan University. Yuki Kobayashi is a lecturer at Osaka Metropolitan University. We are interested in origami engineering, geometry and digital fabrication. In Arimune's graduation thesis, he studied foldable structures based on space-filling solid. In the research process, he made the model by using laser cutter. This model is based on the space-filling solid different than the work Kirihara and Kobayashi submitted in 2021.
Artworks
This artwork is a sponge surface based on a space-filling solid that combines octagonal prisms and truncated cuboctahedra (unit cell ratio 3:1). This model consists of rigid panels connected by hinges. By removing some of the panels from the space-filling solid, we have created this artwork. This development consists of squares, regular hexagons, and regular octagons. The characteristics of this development are high fill rate and regular aesthetic. By overlapping and gluing developments, the multi-layered solid can be created (see upper photo). Moreover, by gluing all the edges of the square and regular octagon that touch at one vertex, the solid rises from the flat state, and becomes rigid (see lower photo).
