Statement

In collaboration with Pari Riahi, we explore the symbiotic relationships between arts and sciences through a collaborative process of research, discovery, and documentation of a phenomenon widely observed in nature -- the fluid vortices. By crossing between disciplines of science and architecture, we use different tools and methods to visualize a natural phenomenon and its attributes across different scales, forms and media. Following the tradition of cabinets of curiosities, our work captures a contained experience by situating it within the historical lineage of shared intentions between the art and sciences and provides a model for interdisciplinary work of this nature.

Navier Stokes Equations are the partial differential equations that represent the motion of fluids. When coupled with Newton’s second law of motion for a dynamic system, a multi physics problem is introduced in which flow forces influence the motion of the structure and in turn the structure influences the fluid around it. Our sculptures represent the solutions of these partial differential equations as they change in time and space. The third dimension in these sculptures is time, enabling us to see how the solutions of these partial differential equations evolve in time and space. The image is a picture of the three sculptures that will be exhibited.
