I decided to give my son Eric’s widow and their two sons a quilt made from his shirts. I was casting about for a design when a sudoku-like puzzle in the December 2020 issue of MAA Focus caught my eye. It used the twelve different three by three Latin squares. It not only reminded me of the quilter’s old standby, Nine Patch, it had a mathematical flavor. I could honor his degree in physics, career as a computer security specialist and speed at Rubik’s cube.
Since I had to replace the A, B and C cells in each block with fabric, I analyzed the fabrics into piles of light, medium, and dark intensity to encode the twelve Latin squares. The quilting is hand stitched.
