Biography
I am a high school mathematics and computer science teacher from Columbus, Ohio. Over the past few years I've been using grid-based designs to create mathematical knitting and crochet pieces. This year I've been experimenting with creating fractal designs through repeated Kronecker products on a seed matrix with entries 1, -1, or 0.

Snowflake Poncho

2024
The pattern created by taking recursive Kronecker products on the matrix with zeros along the main diagonal and ones elsewhere reminded me of a snowflake. I decided I wanted to make a warm garment using this pattern that could be used to keep warm during snowy months. I used Tunisian crochet and entrelac techniques to create this poncho out of two large triangles. Each small square of Tunisian crochet stitches represents one entry in the matrix used to create the pattern. Zeros are represented by squares crocheted with grey yarn and ones were represented by red squares. The garment shows part of the fourth iteration of the fractal pattern.
