3D-Printed Casts Featuring a Voronoi Pattern
Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU)
2024
Our custom 3D-printed casts feature a Voronoi pattern which blends our passion for applied mathematical concepts and innovative design. We scanned the subject using ScandyPro, crafted the piece using AutoCAD's MeshMixer software, and subsequently 3D printed it with Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU). This piece is a testament to the fusion of mathematical concepts with modern fabrication techniques.
The Voronoi pattern is the mathematical concept behind this creation. In a Voronoi pattern, every point within a given region is closer to the “seed” inside that region than to any other point outside that region. Each point along a region’s edge is equidistant from the two nearest seeds. Using MeshMixer, we interplayed the polygons within the Voronoi cells onto the cast, creating an aesthetic grounded in mathematical principles.
Our 3D-printed casts showcase our knowledge of materials and techniques. We tested different qualities of 3D printers and adjusted the printing speed to achieve the smoothest casts, ensuring they would not scratch or irritate the wearer. TPU was chosen for its durability, flexibility, and ability to allow intricate detailing, highlighting the Voronoi pattern.
On the runway, the pattern of the casts commands attention. Its unique geometry evokes mathematical principles, while its aesthetic allure leaves a lasting impression, showcasing the symbiotic relationship between mathematics and wearable art.
