Biography

S. Louise Gould is a retired professor who uses many kinds of technology to explore mathematics in fiber. She spins, sews, weaves and more to create objects that connect to mathematics. She enjoys machine embroidery and digitizing original designs. Most recently she has explored original network drafting and weaving on a 24 shaft mechanical dobby loom. The ideas start with the mathematics and then she seeks ways of representing them in textiles.

A grandson’s enthusiastic response to the Bridges Halifax fashion show and Craig Kaplan’s talk about the discovery of an aperiodic mono tile inspired the trio of shirts for all three grandsons. Using suggestions in the appendix of Smith, David; Myers, Joseph Samuel; Kaplan, Craig S.; Goodman-Strauss, Chaim (2023-05-28). "A chiral aperiodic monotile". arXiv:2305.17743 [math.CO]. the explorations started with the original “hat” tile which used only one tile to tile the plane but required reflections of the tile. It seemed more satisfying to try to tile the plane with a curved sided Spectre. These tiles were too challenging to assemble from card stock. Ultimately I used a Geometer’s Sketchpad constructed Spectre tile expanded to a Mystic cluster construction. I called the expanding constructions “tiles”, “meta tiles” and “meta meta tiles”. I sent a 17” by 22” sample of the tiling to Spoonflower for fabric printing, worked out patterns, and 3-d printed hat buttons. The boys themselves came up with the title “The Aperiodic Cowboys”.
