Statement

I grow mapping cylinders with yarn by seamlessly crocheting along ribbon graphs made from foundation chains. Choosing the foundation chain graph is the most creative part of a project for me. When the final piece slowly grows and reveals its form with a little of my help, it feels like magic. I also enjoy the precision of a laser cutter.

This is a piece I made in tribute to Bathsheba’s work. Although it appears similar to Bathsheba’s Quintron, they are not the same. This piece is the third in a series where I construct a foundation chain graph with two concentric and connected layers in a way that manifests the chiral icosahedral symmetry. As with the previous two pieces, which I exhibited in Bridges 2023 Halifax, the outer layer consists of a dodecahedron. The inner layer is an icosahedron and the two layers are connected by bands that twist by 180 degrees, instead of 90 as in Bathsheba’s Quintron. This surface is bounded by a link that consists of twelve (1,5)-torus knots that intertwine each other symmetrically. It adds a new scene to the orderly-tangle landscape.

The five-intersecting-tetrahedra is one of the most fascinating and inspiring models in math art literature. This work is a carved-out puzzle version of it. The key feature here is that the whole structure is stable without any gluing, and therefore can be disassembled and reassembled.
