Fibonacci Scarf
Knit Wool Yarn
2025
This scarf was created as an homage to the Fibonacci sequence. All design decisions for the piece were made by trying to incorporate as many different numbers from the sequence in multiple ways. The finished product is one piece. The stitch pattern is a garter stitch, a single knit stitch continuously repeated. Two colors were chosen, red and blue, as a nod to the frequent debate amongst my high school students of “What color is math?”, with the most common choices being red and blue. The weight of the yarn used is a three-weight yarn. I knit the scarf using 5 mm-sized needles, a US size 8. The finished piece is about 21 centimeters wide and about 55 inches long and each row of the scarf is 89 stitches.
The scarf is knit in the round with curled ends, representing the infinite nature of the sequence. The width of the red and blue stripes is determined by the few numbers in the sequence (excluding zero) repeated twice. The red stripes decrease in width while the blue stripes increase. Then at the halfway point the pattern reverses and red stripes increase while blue decreases. The result is a symmetric scarf with each stripe aligning with its corresponding width on the other side.
