Biography

Tiffany C. Inglis 2009 MMATH, Computational Mathematics, University of Waterloo 2014 PhD, Computer Science, University of Waterloo During my PhD, I explored many forms of Op Art and pixel art. Now, as an avid knitter and crocheter (hooker?), I strive to bring those two disciplines together by creating optical illusions one pixel stitch at a time.

About the look

Munker-White Illusion Sweater

Cotton yarn

2025

White’s illusion is the effect where the same shade of grey can appear lighter or darker depending on whether it’s surrounded by black or white stripes. The Munker-White illusion builds on this idea with colour, drawing from the Bezold effect, which describes how a colour can look different depending on the colours around it. The Munker-White illusion sweater was created using intarsia knitting for the base and surface crochet to add the stripes. Even though only three colours—black, blue, and pink—were used, the pink appears to shift in shade. This is purely an illusion: the pink looks lighter or darker depending on whether it’s bordered by blue or black.
