Statement

I explore topics in mathematics, often with software tools I create to accelerate the process. I gravitate towards topics that allow me to create physical objects. There is a unique exhilaration that comes from interacting with pieces created during this process. I find inspiration everywhere. In 2017, a visit to the Smithsonian inspired me to explore symmetry and tessellations. I created Polygonia.design, a collection of vector-based graphic design tools.

"Twists and Turns" is an exploration of hexagonal Truchet tiles. The underlying constraint is that the edge of the hexagon is divided into two mirrored halves where the parallel lines start and end. Excluding the border tiles and rotations, there are four unique tiles used in this piece. More tiles were explored, but they were not aesthetically pleasing. Originally the lines were equally spaced, but the inspirational moment was when I realized that that was not a constraint and there were other options for spacing the lines. Here the lines are spaced to appear as if on a tube or cylinder, using a squared function.

Various polyhedra with twisting triangles on each face. Each face is divided into triangles, with one triangle vertex at the center of the face, one at a vertex of the face and one at the center of the edge. Each triangle is then repeatedly transformed by moving its vertices along the edges of the triangle by a small percentage to create a new triangle, until the triangle reaches a minimum size of a few millimeters. Adjacent triangles are transformed in opposite directions.
