Statement

Addison Stanton is an aerospace engineering student at Penn State Brandywine. She finds it interesting to identify the underlying layers of math that lurk beneath the surface of art. She is beginning to understand the ties that connect the art and math community are much deeper than previously thought.

A Residue Diagram can be created by using modular arithmetic to connect a circle of n points evenly spaced around a circle. Each point is given a label from 0 to n-1, and pairs of points x and 2x (mod 248) are connected by a line. This process creates the tangent space of a cardioid shape. This Residue Diagram in the photograph has a 7 foot diameter, 248 nails spaced approximately 2 inches apart with each pair of points connected by red string. This diagram took 3 hours to create in 110 degrees on the Roach Dry Lake Bed in Jean, Nevada.
