Statement

Numbers and structures are not merely tools for analysis. In them I see raw material for expression. Exploration and play through the fields of geometry, number sequences, and data science is prevalent in my work. I believe that math has the power to coax the artist out of oneself, just as art can do the same for the mathematician within. Creating my work has brought with it a more profound appreciation of the role of mathematics in understanding, expressing, and building our world.

Geometric I

76.0 x 56.0 cm

Natural pigment watercolors and graphite on paper

2025

Created exclusively with a compass, straightedge, pencil, and paint, this work is an exploration of geometry as a universal language. Its precise symmetries and balanced proportions mirror patterns found throughout the natural world. The design draws inspiration from Islamic geometric art, particularly the intricate forms that adorn the architecture of Spain, while its colors are derived from pigments hand-collected in New Mexico. In uniting these distant traditions and geographies, the piece becomes a dialogue between mathematical harmony, cultural heritage, and place. The area painted in green represents the proportion of women who hold mathematics PhDs in the United States, grounding the timeless geometry in a contemporary human context.
