Statement

There is no rhyme or reason why I paired a stylized lily (fleur-de-lis) with a heart. But the two motifs actually rhyme in French: Fleurs et Coeurs. The lily is an old heraldic symbol and shows up in the coat-of-arm of my Swiss ancestral town of Hallau (Schaffhausen). It also represents faith and hope. The original design was published ten years ago (T.P. Schaad 2015. 6-Fold Quasiperiodic Tilings with Two Diamond Shapes, arXiv:1503.03018), a larger piece is now created.

Fleurs et Coeurs

Collage of block prints, acrylic paint

2025

Fleurs et Coeurs is a collage of two three-colored block prints. It is a patch of an infinite quasiperiodic tiling with local 6-fold rotational symmetry and can be assembled with a substitution scheme. It is closely related to the 5-fold Penrose tiling which predates this work by five decades. Unlike my preference for primary colors in the past, for this piece I chose a richer palette.
