Statement
I have a systems engineering background and I am fascinated by the intersection of mathematics, art, and nature. I love to express my awe and appreciation of patterns in nature through papercutting and mixed media art.
Artworks
For this piece, I was inspired by the naturally occurring Fibonacci spirals commonly found in flowers, in this case the Torch Ginger. A longstanding idea for why flowers adopt this mathematical arrangement is to enable seeds and florets to pack most efficiently as they bud. To optimally fill space and grow, the angle between the objects is the Golden Ratio. In many cultures, the Torch Ginger flower symbolizes strength and resilience. The traditional Japanese Asanoha pattern, or Hemp Leaf pattern, is overlaid on each petal to symbolize growth. These layers of meanings built upon naturally occurring spirals, are intricately created through hand cut Washi paper and dried flower petals.
