Statement
I am a mathematics professor, illustrator, and printmaker. My work is focused on teaching mathematical concepts through illustration and animation. Recently, in preparing teaching material for a course on math and paper-craft, I found inspiration in flat foldable origami.

This series of illustrations is an exploration of the square twist, a classic origami fold that has been studied by scientists, mathematicians, and origami artists. Using Kawasaki’s Theorem, Maekawa’s Theorem, and the Big-Little-Big Lemma, one can show that there are four unique models for the six possible mountain-valley assignments of a square twist. Each illustration in this series is designed in such a way that when folded according to one of these four models it reveals the shape of a heart.
