Statement

Through my art I make visible the beauty and wonder I see in the often abstract world of mathematics. I enjoy giving visual representations to mathematical concepts such as number, form, and process. I often use patterns that convey messages at multiple levels and scales using a wide variety of mathematical elements and media. Some of my work contains fine detail that allows the art to be viewed differently depending on the distance between the viewer and the art. Another prevalent theme in my work is symmetry, where the overall pattern is created by repeated rotation or translation of a smaller very similar units.

Additional info

A large heart made from 143 small hearts. This piece is part of a series of artworks expressing the integers as geometric arrangements of elements. The digits of 143 represent the letters in each word of the phrase "I love you." This association dates to shortly after the 1894 lantern upgrade to the Minots Ledge Light, an important maritime navigational signal southeast of Boston. Since then, the light has flashed in a 1-4-3 pattern. This interpretation of the number 143 was popularized by Mister (Fred) Rogers on his television shows. He stated "the number 143 means 'I love you.' It takes one letter to say 'I' and four letters to say 'love' and three letters to say 'you.' One hundred and forty-three. 'I love you.' Isn't that wonderful?"

Additional info

Visualizing the first sixty years of of my life using a scalloped spiral of dots. I was born many moons ago, 60 years worth as of 2023. I created this artwork as a way of reflecting about my life and the days since my birth. Each of the 21,916 dots represents one day of my life, with the 755 larger dots representing the full moons during that time span. The twelve calendar months are shown as sinusoidal variations in the radius of the spiral. The spiral completes a year after one full rotation.
