Statement

Since 1980 I have been pursuing my interest in using mathematics as a language for poetics. Along with visual poetics, I present the concept of mathematical poetry by viewing the equation and the variables within the equations as capable of providing the structure for poetic metaphors. These expressions may take the mathematical form of anything including equations from applied mathematics. The cognitive linguistic concepts of conceptual metaphor and conceptual blending are perfect tools to analyze these poetic expressions. My work brings spiritual and cultural concerns together while expressing my mythology as a result of my struggle to comprehend myself concerning nature, the human condition, and my relationship with society at large.

Additional info

There is a short paper published in the proceedings of the conference which addresses this work in more detail. The expression uses the visual image of the snake from the Garden of Eden presenting us with the apple (ensuring death for the world). By the title, we are blending the concept of the apple with the concept of entropy. (ensuring death for the universe) Pondering this condition brings many questions. The math poem uses the similar triangles image schema to map a proportional statement. In the vernacular, the equation says that Nature is to The Garden as The Despot is to the Slave.
