Building with paper lets me hold ideas in my hands. Handling what I’ve made gives me the chance to decipher the character of what I’ve built. This generally leads to wanting to see what happens if I change, develop or expand on whatever it is that has captured my attention.

I stumbled upon a mystery net of radial triangles in book about Franz Zeier. Intrigued, I assembled the net and was gobsmacked to discover that it created the intermingling of two cubes. Compounds were new to me, so I stuck around to find out more. The convex hull came next. Why does it seem to have an entirely different look than the cubes? To bridge that disconnect I designed a hull that opens to let the cubes nestle. It’s such a sublime surprise to experience the perfect fit that, along with the display of these structures, I’m providing a second set for the viewer to play with. I also built the common solid, which hides inside of the compound cubes and opens by pressing the opposing vertices, revealing its own secrets.
