Statement

I've had a life long love affair with geometry, and my sweet spot is taking ancient geometric traditions and combining them with modern mathematical concepts like fractals and polyhedra to create unique, contemporary art and décor. I love making art that captures ancient traditions with a modern twist, and that brings meditative order, beauty, and peace into peoples' private spaces. As beautiful as they are, raw mathematical shapes are to me merely starting points. By seeking new combinations, I move beyond just exploration to true innovation. Thus, although I use the computer to create most of my pieces, I never generate them from code, preferring to use the computer as a tool to recombine basic forms by hand and forge my own creations.

My Jaalihedra™ sculptures cover polyhedral shapes with perforated patterns inspired by jaali - decorative sandstone screens found in the forts and castles of Northwestern India. This sculpture has the exterior shape of a cluster of 6 rhombic dodecahedra. The surface pattern is a historical Islamic geometric pattern with local centers of 10-fold rotational symmetry. The 10-fold rosettes at the center of each face are highlighted in contrasting wood, and 3 color of wood are permuted in a regular way over the entire sculpture.

This lamp is part of my Jewel Lamp series, which are based on polar zonahedra. This lamp features a 7-fold polar zonahedron with a pitch angle of 55 degrees, which has been truncated halfway through the fifth level of faces to sit flat on a surface. The spiraling sets of faces inherent to all polar zonahedra are highlighted in the seven colors of the rainbow. The central face of each spiral is decorated with one of the seven symbols for the "chakras", which are energy centers of the body according to the yogic tradition and are associated with these colors. The chakra symbols are themselves highly geometric, comprising various combinations of circles, polygons, stars, and rotationally symmetric groups of "petals" around the outside.
