Statement
Math is a playground. My degrees are in applied mathematics and statistics, but I have always loved cycles, groups, and geometry. The identification, construction, and transformation of patterns provide an endless supply of building blocks. These blocks allow the expression of my experience of mathematics as so much more than seeing or reading in a book. Large scale sculpture allows perspectives and understanding of transformations to change by physically moving around the object which has been constant the whole time.

Pandemic Waves was created during 2021 when, like many, I was stuck at home alternating between uncertainty and boredom. I was playing with left over Christmas ribbon and started alternating it about a pole in the z-axis. Naturally, these transformed into sine waves of varying amplitudes.
Perhaps more interesting is the extent to which materials shaped the final form. The vinyl lath used had the perpendicular spine needed for support and this also determined the amplitude of the cycles. By using strips of singular LEDs instead of a continuous light, a stroboscopic effect can be experienced at a mere three rotations per minute as the lights about the center will often appear to move counter to sculpture rotation.
