I enjoy finding and creating mathematical patterns in the everyday. I recently acquired an extremely basic circular knitting machine and found myself drawn to the idea of extending it's capabilities past mere hats and 2-dimensional sheets and cylinders into something more mathematically interesting.

Knit Hyperboloid
38.0 x 26.0 x 26.0 cm
Yarn, Wire
2025
The yarn hyperboloid is a dynamic (my kids love playing with it) knit sculpture made from two colors of yarn and some copper wire for framing. It began as a personal challenge to come up with something truly interesting that could be made with a very basic, hand-cranked, circular knitting machine. I wanted to make something that took advantage of the machines strengths, yet also used it in an unexpected way.
The entire knit hyperboloid is knit in one continuous stretch on the knitting machine. By inserting and removing secondary strands, I am able to create the internal string hyperboloid shape.
