Statement
As a carpenter I aim to design contemporary furniture out of massive wood. Since I was originally educated as an Industrial Design Engineer at TU Delft, I tend to involve complex shapes or constructions that seem to challenge the laws of physics.

I wanted to create a table in which a rocky structure merges into a flat surface. While looking for the right structure, I was told about Penrose tiling. That was the pattern I was looking for! So I designed and crafted a table with Penrose tiling in the horizontal plane that transforms into a 3D projection of Penrose tiling, the Wieringa roof, in the vertical planes.
During the process I encountered the following maths related challenges:
- connection of a Wieringa roof to a flat surface
- connection between Wieringa roof and Penrose tiling
- the implications of material thickness
I enjoy working on the intersection of art & design, craftsmanship and mathematics.
I'm grateful for the advice of Prof. Dr. Ir. L. Feijs.
