Statement

Artist Laura Marotta and mathematician Brian Redmond share an interest in geometric constraint. In the fall of 2022, they began exploring how to translate theoretical forms into tangible objects through the materials and methods of contemporary sculpture. Their collaboration honours mathematical elegance and offers geometric inquiry as aesthetic, playful, and approachable for a wide audience.

'Spikey Soccer' features 20 hexagonal and 12 pentagonal generalized polar zonohedral domes, crafted from coloured transparent acrylic. Each dome is manually cut, scored, folded, and secured with tape to form a 6.25-inch diameter Archimedean truncated icosahedron. The transparent surface reveals the spikey negative space, emphasizing three key elements: the faces, the generalized polar zonohedra, and the interior void. Analogous colours create a harmonious blend, enhancing the interplay of surface form and space. Sculpturally, the spikey interior emerges as a defining aspect of the composition.
