Statement

With my background in mechanical engineering and complex machine design, I applied the same principles to create geometric abstract sculptures. This “Engineering of Art” approach includes developing general models, using analytical algorithms, and 3D design tools to generate and select the most artistic solutions, building sculpture using combination of CNC, 3D printing and old-style woodworking. The exciting aspect of this method is forming various shapes from one model and transforming them. At several Bridges conferences, I presented Metamorphosis in three different families. This year, the sculpture’ family is based on Platonic Solids, with edges replaced by rings and similar components.

Additional info

Sculpture depicts a family of PLATONIC SOLIDS with edges replaced by rings, Möbius strips, etc. ICOSAHEDRON based sculpture has 30 wooden rings connected with 12 joints. OCTAHEDRON with 12 edges replaced by interlocking rings forms three-color orbital sculpture. TETRAHEDRON generates sculpture with 6 Möbius strips Converting 3 ring orbital Tetrahedron sculpture into three-section ring was surprising. DODECAHEDRON produced 6 spherical sculptures with 30 concentric rings. Surface patterns vary by angular coordinate. 2 HEXSAHEDRON sculptures have 12 edge replacing ellipses. These sculptures retain symmetric patterns of Platonic Solids enhanced with artistic elements.
