Wave Cars - Sine, Circle and Fourier
10.0 x 15.0 x 20.0 cm
Medium-Density Fibreboard (MDF)
2024
This exhibit has mechanical cars that help visualize the effect of parametrically combining various waves/curve i.e. sine/cosine waves, circle and also adding two sine waves. Each car uses gear mechanisms to guide a marker along the locus of the curve and plots it on the ground. The first car traces the path of a point on the wheel’s rim. The second car, via the gear system, oscillates and plots a circle through its x and y movements. The third car has a gear rotating inside an another gear, traces waveforms which is addition of two sine waves. Collectively these cars demonstrate how adjustments in mechanical configurations help visualize abstract mathematical functions.
