Statement
We, Tess Geerts and Owen Rohm, met at Bridges 2024 and quickly bonded over our shared passion for art, mathematics, and typography. Although we find ourselves very close philosophically, physically we are separated by an ocean. One of us is based in Eindhoven and the other in Atlanta. Despite this challenge, we were inspired to collaborate on an artwork that embodies consistency, interactivity, and a sense of playfulness.

Segmented Fonts
60.0 x 60.0 x 20.0 cm
Digital interactive artwork printed on sticker paper
2025
The Segmented Fonts Project was inspired by segmented displays. You may be familiar with seven segment displays from digital clocks, which use seven segments to display the digits 0 to 9. Similarly, our project uses a grid system of 52 segments using grids, diagonals and ovals to construct all the English letterforms.
Our art piece allows a participant to move the exterior edges and interior guidelines of our grid system, which updates all the displayed letterforms in real time, allowing people to play with a full alphabet in a live and responsive way. Once a typographical artist has landed on the perfect proportions, they can save their own font with the push of a button to use it and print it out on a sticker.
