Statement

Iris folding originated in Holland. Its popularity rose for the recent pandemic that kept crafters, in Holland inside, in a desperate desire to make something beautiful. The folded edge can be glued against a progressive pattern. The completed work shows spirals closing in on the eye, like in a camera, an iris, not a flower. My own Goldbach influenced pentagon shape has five sides but none of the sides are equal. Richard Nau, wrote a program to fill my unconventional shaped pentagon with the line pattern to complete the desired project. It works to create a series of spirals that complement each other yet each one is different from the others.

Iris folding originated, many years ago, in Holland. It’s a simple craft that uses folded paper to form spirals within a shape such as my Goldbach pentagon created through the numbers 13 and 17 - 13 triangles for the pentagon and 17 for the space. A general Mathematica program was written to provide the pattern. Parameters in the program included the number of folds, their offset, and the rate of convergence. Sizes, materials, and colors were selected intuitively for their artistic appeal.

This work was completed using the patterns found on the inside of envelopes that come to one's house daily via the United States Postal System. A general Mathematica program was developed to create twisted polygon templates for such irises. Parameters included the degree and regularity of the outline, the number of folds, the size of the offset, and the rate of convergence.
