Statement

I am a self-taught origami artist and started practising origami four years ago when I was 10. I chose to fold the Flowering Grid by Eric Gjerde because of its simple and easily repeatable structure. Unlike the Spread Hex Tessellation, which this pattern is closely related to, the layering of the hexagons changes, disrupting the radial symmetry. However, like all tessellations based on a hexagonal grid, it maintains a six-fold rotational symmetry. Mathematically, this pattern can be described using a triangular grid and symmetry transformations.

After finishing all the origami models in Origami Tessellations by Eric Gjerde, I closed the book and noticed a tessellation on the cover that wasn’t included in the instructions. Curious, I looked deeper but found no guides for it. Determined, I decided to reverse-engineer it, and that’s how I ended up folding my first Flowering Grid tessellation. I loved the design so much that whenever someone asked me to fold a tessellation, I would choose this one. What I appreciate most about it is that, despite its harmonious pattern, there is still an element of chaos in its geometry.
