Statement

Belinda Hill is a book artist who loves creating and uses her past experiences in mixed media, fiber and fabric arts, paper arts to create art books. Finding and exploring patterns is part of my design process. So this book was created because of a curious occurrence while experimenting with a 4 inch mini-loom to weave small squares in different yarns and fibers. I noticed that one specific thread was creating color pooling, not unusual except that this weaving method requires laying on three layers of weft and then weaving the fourth layer. So the same color had to come together in the same spot in all four layers.

Additional info

Many fiber artists have noticed when working with variegated fibers that individual colors come together in patterns or sections - pools. This is can be created deliberately in some fiber work like knitted socks or ikat fabric or in random patterns. In this book a random occurrence of the repeat length of the colors in a variegated thread came together to form distinct pools of color. This work shows a series of four layer woven squares. This was interesting because the probability of color pooling should decrease with 4 layers in the weaving. Variables like differences in tension while weaving, starting position on the variegated thread and variations in the repeat lengths of colors also affected the placement of the pools of color.
