Statement
David Swart is a visual artist / photographer that creates mathematical artwork. He prefer to "grow his own" software which allows him the flexibility to explore mathematical ideas in his own way. David's goal is to create visual puzzles that demonstrate the fascinating aspects of themes that interest him, including but not limited to spherical geometry, spherical imagery, and their projections.
Artworks

Jormungandr 2D
45.0 x 60.0 cm
Hand drawn Ink on paper
2026
Jörmungandr is a dragon/serpent who meanders through and fills his rectangular, 2D world. He dreams of living in 3D.
So, that is what he does: he breaks out and weaves himself into a literal globe, his black spots becoming the continents. He literally encircles the world and bites his tail, like all good ouroboroi.
This art piece continues the artist's exploration of creating papercraft globes. It explores three spaces at once: as a dragon in 2D planar space; as the globe in 3D spherical space; and as a progression of the color wheel in 1D linear space.
The piece evokes Escher’s Dragon, the visual language of Celtic knots, and the Norse myth of Jörmungandr, the Midgard Serpent that encircled the world to bite its own tail.
