Statement
I am interested in the relationship between mathematics and clay, and how each can inform the other. Mathematical beauty can be shown in three dimensions using the most ubiquitous of materials, which, when high fired becomes permanent. My sculptures show the imperfections of the human hand, relating to the dialogue between mathematics and human thought.

Stoneware Clay, Black Vitreous Slip

A sphericon is a geometric solid created by slicing a double cone, rotating one half and rejoining the pieces. When rolled the entire surface eventually touches the ground in a serpentine motion. This work in ceramic brings a vitality to the structure, showing the touch of my hand in its making, along with the permanence of the material after high firing the clay to 1260 degrees.
