Statement

We met at Bridges in 2023 and have stayed in touch since, but this is our first year collaborating. We are both math hobbyists and designers with shared interests in tiles and typography, which inspired our piece this year. Our hope is to combine our powers of type design, letterpress printing, and digital fabrication to turn our project into printable letterpress type. Though not the most legible of fonts, we hope this typeface invites people to play with the possibilities of hexagonal letters, whether that be writing messages on multiple axes, in concentric rings, or meandering across a page in all sorts of directions.

We designed a Truchet tile inspired hexagonal font using only straight lines and arcs centered on the edges and vertices of a hexagon. The patterns on the tiles merge into continuous shapes because of their matching dark-light-dark edges. The tall piece reads “I cannot be free as long as you are not free” in both vertical directions, using the interconnecting shapes of the letters to underscore the message. The cube shaped piece uses each visible face for a stanza of a poem. The length of each line follows the sequence of triangle numbers. Since the text exists on multiple axes, it is unclear where it starts, and invites the phrases to be read cyclically. They read “I am one tiny piece”, “I am one vast space”, and “I am not here alone”.
