Statement

This creation grew from studying Group Theory, where Taeo and I explored how mathematical structure can shape visual experience. Starting with a photo of a door I took while in China, I used the D4 symmetry group to rotate and reflect the image until a dahlia like form emerged. Tessellating the square created a kaleidoscopic field where order and variation coexist. Our collaboration is unique: my handsewn Photo Quilt blends with Taeo’s love of bold color, creating a balanced yet vibrant fusion. I hope viewers look closely and sense the mathematics humming beneath the surface.

This artwork was inspired by a math and art course at Alfred University, where we were challenged to turn mathematical ideas into visual design. Using group theory—specifically the D4 symmetry group—a tessellated pattern was built through rotations, reflections, and translations. The kaleidoscopic structure highlights the elegance of symmetry in mathematics. Printed on Kodak Metallic paper and hand sewn as a Photo Quilt, the work merges digital precision with a personal, tactile process.
