Statement

Lisa Marks and Owen Rohm collaborate at the intersection of craft, mathematics, and making. Marks investigates how parametric design and computation can engage the geometric logic embedded in traditional craft practices, while Rohm creates mathematical artworks that invite curiosity and playful discovery. Together they translate mathematical structures into tactile forms that can be built, manipulated, and explored. By combining computational design, traditional craft knowledge, and accessible fabrication techniques, their work reveals the beauty of mathematical patterns while inviting broad audiences to engage with them through hands-on experience.

Cable Knit Truchet Tiles

2026

Inspired by traditional Aran Island cable knitting, off the coast of where Bridges ’26 is being held, this work investigates the formal translation of cable motifs into Smith-style Truchet tile–based “granny squares.” Each square functions as a modular unit that can be rotated within a larger tessellated field, enabling combinatorial variation across the surface. To ensure continuous tangent connections between adjacent tiles, the uneven proportion of the “seed stitch” was used to compress the cable arch vertically, increasing width relative to height and resulting in smoother visual continuity and more coherent cable intersections across tile boundaries.
